![]() ![]() (The pillar deconstructs, causing a controlled 'cave in' that plugs the magma-filled corridor.) The pillar is connected to a lever, so I can drop the block and seal off my fortress. A block of stone is hanging from a pillar. You'll see below the cistern plug is a magma-filled corridor which leads off to my death trap/main entrance. That's because I dropped a block of engraved stone into a hole I designed for that very purpose. You'll notice that the corridor I used to fill up the cisterns has been blocked off. It's easier to dig out extra cisterns in advance in case you need them later than to expand as you need them. I like to leave room for glass and kiln too. Under normal conditions, I like nine smelters and maybe six forges, depending. ![]() You can channel out a hole to lead to the magma whenever you want to build a forge or a smelter. If fill the cistern with magma first, digging the room out will be a torturous process with cancelled digging due to warm stone. Once it has been dug out, you can fill the cistern with magma. It can be a normal, blank room, but you know that there'll be magma underneath. Anyway, before you fill up each cistern, dig out the room above. I find this arrangement easy to designate and aesthetically pleasing, but in truth you probably don't need so many channeled holes to the magma cistern. The top right section of the image shows the Smelting/Forging Chamber. This method allows you to use the magma in each cistern for smelting and forging whilst the next one fills up (once the first cistern is full to 7/7).ĭO NOT FILL UP THE CISTERN UNTIL THE ROOM ABOVE IS COMPLETE. Try to fill up too many cisterns at once, and the magma will dry up as it spreads out it may never fill the cistern, or it will take a very long time. Only once each chamber, starting from the bottom right one, was filled did I send a dwarf down to dig a notch out of the wall and fill up the next chamber. This cistern was dug out with each of the chambers seperated by a wall. Also, don't try to fill up too much at once. Dig out the magma cistern, remembering to ensure that it can be easily escaped from once your dwarfs have dug into the magma. This is how I arrange my magma forge/smelter area. ![]()
